Kiwi-the magical fruit!

Kiwi-the magical fruit!

First and foremost, isn’t Kiwi just the cutest name for a fruit?! These fuzzy, sweet and tangy little guys are more than just adorable though, they’re jam packed with vitamins, antioxidants + fiber. So today we’re going to give them the spotlight they deserve and break down all their yummy goodness!

Kiwi’s are a great source of both soluble and insoluble fiber and also contain the protease enzyme actinidin which aids in the digestion and absorption of proteins.

Kiwi’s are chock full of vitamins particularly Vitamin C (150% RDI in just one kiwi!!), vitamins K + E, potassium and folate. They’re also full of antioxidants and can help protect and repair DNA damage caused by oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is when there is an imbalance of free radicals and antioxidants in the body. Antioxidants help eliminate free radicals from going CRAYY by donating one of their electrons so the free radical can chill out. If the free radicals take over and there aren’t enough antioxidants to donate their electrons, the body becomes inflamed + can lead to a host of health problem including diseases such as cancer and heart disease. It’s impossible to completely prevent oxidative stress so that’s why it’s V important to consume antioxidant rich foods such as the lovely kiwi!

Pro Tip: eat the fuzzy skin!! By eating the skin, you up the fiber content by 50%, folate by 34% and Vitamin E by 34%. There’s also a higher concentration of antioxidants in the skin than the flesh!!

Try adding kiwis to your smoothies, dip them in some dark chocolate and throw them in the freezer for a refreshing treat, you can even chop them up and add them to homemade salsa! Or you can just eat them me and emmy’s favorite way…biting into them like an apple and enjoying every last fuzzy and tangy bite! YUM! KIWI’S FTW!
